Taking Welsh Cakes to a whole new level, this weeks guest blogger Calon Lan Cakes

Calon Lân Cakes was established in January 2016 & after a career in forensics, it was complete change of direction!

My heart has always been in food & it was a simple case of ‘now or never’. So…I took the plunge, took voluntary redundancy from South Wales Police & the rest is history.

I’ve always loved to cook & welshcakes were made by my mum regularly when we were children. I’ve always loved making them with my own children & decided quite quickly that this was the direction that I wanted to take in terms of running my own business.

Our unique selling point has always been our delicious, freshly baked, homemade, artisan welshcakes, made to a traditional recipe. I care passionately about the quality of ingredients that I use & everything we bake is freshly made to order. Maintaining that homecooked feel is very important to us, we aim for the ‘not mass produced’ experience when you try any of our delicious products.

So, Calon Lan Câkes was set up & we began exhibiting at wedding fayres to get our name out there.

We initially developed a range of welshcake wedding favours, packaged in a large selection of packaging styles. In our opinion, the options out there were very limited. So, we offered something different to couples who were looking for something a little more unusual, ranging from favour boxes to vintage paper packages to mini glass jars.

We very quickly began taking orders & this enabled us to extend our range & develop different products.

We now offer our delicious welshcakes in a large selection of flavours, with many more in the pipeline.

We also began to supply Bara Brith (a light, welsh, traditional tea loaf), which has been very popular, particularly as wedding favours. Again, this was made often when we were children & I meet so many people who have never tried it before. We endeavour to always showcase the best Welsh produce.

Besides supplying beautiful welshcake & bara brith wedding favours, we have since developed our stunning Welshcake Tower. Filled with freshly baked welshcakes, it can be used to serve canapes & we have even supplied it as a wedding cake!

We also specialise in bespoke welshcake wedding cakes. I enjoy this area very much – creating a couple’s wedding cake is such an honour & every one of our wedding cakes are completely individual, made entirely to a couple’s unique specification. Perfect if you are looking for an alternative & unusual wedding cake.

One of my favourite products that we developed are our lovely welshcake ‘lovepoons’. Perfect as wedding favours & we’ve also supplied them for Valentine’s Day & Mother’s Day.

We’ve also diversified from weddings & now cater for all types of event from supplying to businesses, corporate functions, baby showers, Christenings, fashion shows, birthdays, Christmas – the list is endless!

After being in business for just over 3 enjoyable years, my learning curve is still huge! It reminds me to stay humble & learn from others.

Hence, one of the highlights of our business turning 3 was our ability to join The Wedding Guild of Wales.

This was something that I aspired to for a long time & was absolutely thrilled to become a member of such a prestigious group of wedding suppliers.

It is such a professional organisation & being able to exhibit at their wedding showcases is wonderful. My fellow suppliers are so friendly & I’m very proud to be member.

So, that’s a little bit about Calon Lân Cakes & our background – Diolch am ddarllen 😊
